Gmail-Story of Send

Google has posted a video and infographics showing what happens to your email once you press “send.” It is fun and informative. Of course, much of the video is promoting Google’s green initiative, but nevertheless it is worth a watch.

Video is above. See the infographics here.

Apple’s dominance in Hollywood product placement

Photographs by The Kobal Collection (2); Paramount; Everett Collection (4); Fox (via Businessweek Online)

Peter Burrows and Andy Fixmer of Businessweek have written a fabulous article about Apple’s dominance in Hollywood product placement.

Apple’s gadgets were discussed or shown 891 times on TV in 2011, up from 613 in 2009. The latest Mission: Impossible movie featured eight minutes of screen time for iPhones, iPads, and iMacs. Exprts estimates the value of that screen time at $23 million

Here’s the biggest surprise for me: unlike many companies, Apple says it never pays for its products to appear on television or in movies.

The article is well-written and  carefully researched. Read it here.

Vintage mugshots from 1920′s

The Sifter has published an incredible collection of vintage mugshots found at the Historic Houses Trust. The shots are from the collection of Sydney Police in Australia.

The mugshot of Mr. William Stanley Moore was taken on May 1st, 1925. He has been described in the caption as: an opium dealer operating with large quantities of faked opium and cocaine. Also a wharf labourer and associates with water front thieves and drug traders.

Many of the shots looks like they were taken with a 4×5 camera. And the look and feel of some of the shots is typical of what many men’s fashion magazines (GQ, Esquire etc) aspire to, but often fail to achieve. I mean just look at the shot on the right, the hat turned down, cigarette in hand, the other hand in pant pocket–it is like something straight out of a kickass fashion mag,

These dudes may be criminals and scumbags, but they were stylin’.

And compared to the mugshots of today ( below) these vintage photographers were creating works of art.

See many more here.

Bullshit “superfood” headline of the day

Pomegranate juice has become the latest, fadiest superfood. If it was not enough for the pom juice industry to convince you that antioxidants present in pomegranate juice are good for your heart, surely you should go out and buy it because it will help your sex life.

By the way, increased testosterone levels can cause excessive facial hair, muscle mass and voice deepening in both men and women. And often these symptoms are more noticeable in women.

I will bet you my last dollar this study was funded by the pomegranate juice industry, which would like nothing better than you drinking a glass of their juice every day.

I say booolshit!
