The physics of falling cats

Sugar the cat survived a 19-story fall.

Sugar, the white cat from Boston survived a 19-story fall and suffered only minor injuries.

Apparently, the very height from where she fell may have helped her survive: According to a 1987 study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association,  kitties who fell from higher floors had a much better chance of survival because they can spread themselves out, much like a parachute, and slow down the landing.

Mike Brammer, assistant manager of the animal rescue services department at the Animal Rescue League of Boston explained to MSNBC: “You notice where their legs attach to the body, they have … the extra fur right there,” he said . During a fall, “they’re able to glide a little bit and control … where they are going.”

Ok, now I know.
